Swirl is a glass topped coffee table with a base made from Victorian Ash.
The Whole Story
‘Swirl’ is a glass topped coffee table with a timber base made from 24 triangular pieces of Victorian Ash. Inspired by the seed pods of the desert sheoak, the design uses triangles ‘leaning’ to one side edged jointed to create a sense of dynamism, recalling pleated material in movement.
The clear glass top allows the viewer to appreciate the geometric forms of the base, and the interplay of light and shadow of angled planes of Victorian Ash. I used Vic Ash as its pale colour provides a beautiful contract between the planes of the base.
The idea was developed while I was a Studio Fellow at the Centre for Furniture Craftsmanship in Maine, USA in August 2015. Back in Australia, the design was drawn up in Rhino to allow proportions, scale, degree of tilt of each piece to be assessed. Once the design was finalised, it was made from individually cut pieces, glued together in groups and then as one unit.
