The Slot Shelf is a contemporary and minimalist twist on the common metal perforated garage shelving system.
The Whole Story
Growing up in Australia’s South West, surrounded by nature, I have learnt to appreciate the simplicity of design - appreciating objects that may be commonly recognized for their functional purpose rather than their aesthetic. For the Slot Shelf, I was particularly inspired by common metal perforated garage shelving, using this as the heart and structure of the design. The result is a simple, yet elegant shelf that expresses minimalism from every angle - introducing a modern twist on the common garage shelving now being incorporated into the modern home. It’s a subtle piece that enhances the space it’s in and of course, provides functional room for storage.
To style the shelf, I followed current contemporary trends by using a light timber that contrast well with greys and other warm colours. The frame is made from Victorian ash with a soap wash finish, while the shelves are powder coated aluminium. The shelves run into a rebate on the cross beam of the frame, creating a unique and interesting way of connecting the shelves. The shelves themselves hold the frame in place and resits forces that are applied to the frame. The Slot Shelf has no fixtures, which means it can be easily assembled, flat packed and moved, while also using simple joinery techniques that make it easy to manufacture.
