A hand-crafted timber table-piece, inspired by the phenomenon of clouds.
The Whole Story
This two-piece work of playful curves, started as four 42 x 42 x 1200mm battens of radiata pine. Not only did these battens come together to form an object of aesthetic pleasure, they came together to comprise an object of quirky functionality, depending on the eye of the user. Keys, pens, buttons, and the like, can all find a resting space in the nooks and alcoves of these pine clouds.
The fabrication process of this work greatly influenced its design, causing it to evolve from a delicate trellis-like form, to a chunkier, softer one. From lamination and thicknessing, to stencilling, band-sawing and endless sanding and sculpting, Cloud Pine was always a labour of love. It was as satisfying to craft, as it is to have on the centre of the coffee-table.
