This is a reading chair designed to impact the room and your mind as the weight, colour and unusual shape draw you in.
The Whole Story
Hunchmark has been working with a chainsaw artist in South-East Queensland to produce a reading chair carved from a solid stump of timber, cut from the log of a Queensland native Rose Gum hardwood. The timber which would have otherwise been used for firewood, was in this case salvaged from a previously logged tree to instead create a piece of furniture to last for generations. The concept behind the Animal Chair design, stems from Hunchmark’s exploration of forms with his ceramics range. The chair grew out of the desire to magnify the ceramic animalistic pots he make by hand into a larger more impactful design which could still hold the impressions left by the maker. Through the process of carving with a chainsaw and grinder and then various sanding techniques, a very smooth but slightly uneven and asymmetrical surface is created which is so common for us to encounter in nature. The forms encompass animalistic and humanistic inspired traits which invite the user to create a stronger bond with the chair, so that it may be taken care of for generations.
